Planning Photos for Your Company Holiday Party

A company holiday party is a different kind of event to photograph. Nobody's there for a keynote or a lanyard. They're there to celebrate the year with the people they spent it with, and the photos should look like that.

The first thing worth deciding is timing. Most of what a company wants from the night happens in the first two or three hours: arrivals, everyone dressed up, the welcome remarks, any awards or recognition. Later in the evening belongs to the guests. Booking coverage around that window usually works better than paying for the whole night.

Team photos come next. A holiday party is often the one night a whole team is in the same room. Pick a spot ahead of time, ask someone from each group to gather people, and shoot them early while everyone's fresh. It takes ten minutes and gets you photos you won't easily get any other time of year.

Then give your photographer a short brief. Who's speaking and when, who's on the leadership team, whether there's a toast or an award, and anyone who'd rather not be photographed. A few notes up front keep the night running smoothly.

Last, book early. December is the busiest month of the year for company parties across the Bay Area, from restaurant buyouts in Oakland to office celebrations in San Jose, and the best dates go first.
